Do I Need to Hire a DUI Lawyer?

I’ve been asked more than once, “Why do I need to hire a DUI lawyer?” If you’ve been arrested for driving under the influence of intoxicants or a DUII/DUI, the very first thing you should do is hire an experienced DUI lawyer. Here are a couple of great reasons why:

Time is shorter than you think

After an arrest in Oregon for DUI, you have some very short timelines that need to be met, especially with DMV and the court’s DUI diversion process.DMV will suspend your driver’s license almost immediately. You have only 10 days from the date of your arrest to request an administrative DMV hearing to challenge the license suspension. The information on that deadline and how to request a DMV hearing is buried in fine print on the paperwork you received when you were arrested. Your DUI lawyer will know how to calculate the deadline, what to put in the request (and what not to put in it – hint: the request is not an opportunity to talk about what happened), and where to send it.If you are eligible for DUI diversion, you have to file the right paperwork, filled out correctly, within 30 days of your first scheduled appearance in court. Your DUI lawyer can evaluate whether you are eligible for diversion and help you decide whether diversion is the right option for you. In addition, your DUI lawyer will prepare the paperwork for you the right way and get it filed in time.
